I've always been fascinated with malls also. When I was a kid, my older brother had a college textbook for retailing with this photo in it of a "modern, up-to-date" mall ...early 1970's maybe?? I agree however, back then there was style and individuality. We lived in a small town in the south ...imagine seeing a New York mall's photo ...wow!
Wow, both A&S and Flagg Brothers Shoes in the same shot. Classic!
Just imagine Paul Mauriat's - Love is Blue playing in the background in mono for a complete retro experience.
I'm loving this shot. That's what I call 'classic' mall architecture. Never heard of of the shops that are seen in that image, but they still bring back vivid memories of old storefronts in my neck of the woods.

My dad was one of the first few employees hired by Macy's in Walt Whitman Mall when the mall first opened. He worked in the men's clothing department, then into TVs and then carpets. He used to drive every day from where we lived in Jamaica Queens until 1966 when we moved to the Island.
I worked there for a year or two also when I was in high school (Half Hollow Hills); class of '69
Also worked at EJ Korvettes just to the south of WW Mall ... they sort of shared the parking lot.
Spent LOTS of time in that place. Thanks again for the memory.

growing up in Melville I spent many Saturdays of my youth with friends at this mall, it takes me back to buying black light posters at Spencer gifts and music at Sam Goody.
