Mall Watcher Collection - Mallrats

Mallrats DVD
(10th Anniversary Extended Edition) (1995)

You know it (most of you), you love it, and here's the mid '90s slacker mall culture hit on DVD! If you love anything to do with shopping malls, you gotta have this one in your collection. Because you don't hate shopping malls... Do you?

Plot Synopsis
:
"Brodie Bruce, a Sega and comic book obsessed college student, and his best friend, TS Quint, are both dumped by their girlfriends on the same day, and to deal with their loss, they both go to the local mall. Along the way, they meet up with some friends, including Willam, a guy who stares at Magic Eye pictures, desprately trying to see the hidden image; Gwen, one of TS's ex-girlfriends; and Jay & Silent Bob, of Clerks fame. Eventually, they decide to try and win back their significant others, and take care of their respective nemesises (TS's girlfriend's father, and a store clerk who hates the two for not having any shopping agenda)."

Cliché plot or not, I like that movie. Not just because they showed it in a mall, but also because game show host Art James made a cameo. (I'm also a game show fan.)

It's one of those films I've enjoyed a lot! Wish I had a mall like that to go to.

Hopefully the new DVD will be as good as the last. I kinda wanted to have the old "workprint" version of the film when Kevin originally didn't have it in the "New Jersey Trilogy", and much of it was somewhat an homage to "Animal House."

In case anyone was interested this movie was filmed at Eden Prairie Center in Eden Prairie, Minnesota. It has been renovated since the movie was filmed so the interior looks different but the funny skinny escalators are still the same.

mallrats is okay but if it's shopping malls you want there's nothing better than the original dawn of the dead. it's a total orgy of 70s interior design. or, if you're more into late 80's style, i'd suggest paul mazursky's scenes from a mall, which, as the name suggests, takes place almost entirely inside a mall (the beverly center, to be exact.) the humour hasn't aged well, but the backgrounds have only gotten better.
