Mall Music: Pop-Shopping!

Pop Shopping Vol 1 CD
Juicy Music from German Commercials (1960-1975)

(Description via Movie Grooves) During the 60's & 70's, advertisers were coming up with some innovative ideas to market their products. One of these was the production of flexi discs that contained pop music that also advertised the product. Popshopping 1 brings together these highly collectable, incredibly rare and fantastically groovy tunes for the first time. The CD/LP also contains some great tunes from TV adverts. All together now - "Mouuu-liii-nex!"

Amazon blurbs:
(5 stars!) "What a trippy disc! This is the kind of compilation CD that's great for cocktail or '60s/'70s-themed parties. It's chock full of German commercial jingles from the '60s and '70s, and they're so funky! You don't even need to know German to get into the groove. And how can you not laugh at a song called "Komm In Fahrt"? Groovilicious!!!"

(5 stars!) "Groovier than the seventies! This album is so much more than seventies hit cavalcades can provide! Groovy camp, or what can one say about Minikillers? And what an earth were they? Nevermind. Feels good!"

Oh I just had to mention this CD here at MOA! :) Very cool stuff! And it goes perfectly with those vintage shopping radio spots I posted before, and the old Kresge music recording, too. Samples from Pop Shopping are available at the Amazon link below. Highly recommended.

I own this cd, and the second volume as well (Popshopping 2, which is apperantly out of print). They are both great, and highly recommended.

Forgive me if this is not related directly, but all this talk of advertising jingles for various stores and malls, as well as mall 'muzak', reminded me of this.

I have a couple PC simulation (sim) games whose soundtracks feature the kind of music (muzak) one would hear piped through these malls of our past. Sadly I can't rip the tracks and put them online, due to both space constraints and copyrights...because they really do sound neat and really put your mind back in the 60s-early 70s when malls were in their heyday. They would have made great listening while perusing this blog.

Nowadays, unless you go to a really posh upscale mall, you will instead hear the same usual vocalized junk that teenagers are into, heard on commercial broadcast radio. During the 'mall walker' pre-opening hours, it'll be lite/adult contemporary playlists....again with vocals intact.

I sure do miss those days where ALL you heard no matter what mall you went to, was instrumentalized variants of popular songs, or jazzy-styled tunes.

Tyler: Thanks for the review!

Matt: I absolutely agree with you about the old kind of Muzak being better. I miss it, too. The stuff I hear now in stores just sounds like top 40 radio, and tends to annoy rather than soothe or lull.

But hey, which games were you talking about? I'd like to know. Is one MALL TYCOON?
