Woodfield Mall

Here's yet another great Woodfield Mall interior photo. This snapshot of the mall's grand court amphitheater area, was taken in 1975 and comes courtesy of Steven Wilson, who made the following related notes in the comment section of my last Woodfield Mall post:

Alfred Taubman"Woodfield's dramatic focal point was the carpeted amphitheater area with its fantastic surroundings of the fountain, waterfall, pools, balconies and ramps above, the suspended moiré piece of art, the stunning ceiling, and more. The large Kenneth Snelson sculpture was actually separated from the main open space of the grand court by two ramps. This separation created kind of a quiet zone for the sculpture's setting and the seating area at its base."Mall history: 1971 - present

Wow! Great picture of my favorite wing of that mall...too bad a Macy's sign now hangs there!
Never been here but I aspire to see more Taubman malls. This one, like I might've said before, must've been a model when they built Stamford Town Center with a similar ampitheater center court. The attention this mall's getting from you and Labelscar lately is super.
I lived in Mt. Prospect and went to this mall in 1975. I thought it was so cool (I thought I was too, in my hiphugger, purple, bell-bottom jeans)
This was always my favorite color scheme for the amphitheater's carpet: magenta and purple. The vibrant colors added some energy to this mind-boggling interior space.
Thanks for the link to Kenneth Snelson's site! I just took a quick look at it, but did not find any reference to this piece. You'll definitely notice, though, similarities to his other works.
Easily, my favorite area of the Woodfield Mall when I'm down there once every year. Just the size of the court itself awes me.
When we lived in the area in the late 1980's they used to build a 2 story model home in the center of the mall. It was amazing!
There is an elevator now bottom right of picture, the person in the white shirt would be walking right at it,I came to ILL. in 77 this where we hung a lot..2 Music lands,The Alley,The Tinder Box,Jean Nicole, Chess King,Merry Go Round,the thing to do was dump some Ivory liquid in the fountain..That mall was always an easy place to find a job.

we used to hang there frequently as kids.There were 2 Musiclads,The Alley,Merry Go Round,Jean Nicole,The tinder Box,Johns Garage,Hermans Sporting goods,Chess King..It was an easy place to get a job during high school.We used to dump Ivory liquid
in the fountain under the tunnel,come back later to see it filled with Bubbles.The theater was inside the mall too,and an ice skating rink.

Used to be my favorite mall. But Marshall Field's is gone, Roy Rogers (great salad bar) gone - John's Garage - with the windows that looked out over the skating rink - all gone.
Still hugely popular though. Just not for me.
I like the carpeted amphitheater, it looks so luxurious.
I'm astonished with that Mall I can see it's very elegant I had never seen Mall like that before, I'd like to going there because I know I ca get everything.
Good post. I study something tougher on totally different blogs everyday. It should at all times be stimulating to learn content material from other writers and follow a bit something from their store
I used to work at Merry Go Round! And wow did I have some boots!!!!! We got to take the good stuff before it went to the floor!!! I have an 'It's our World' bag with logo & handle from M.G.R...... Ahhh memories :)
