That would be Mt. Diablo.

My mother worked at the Macy's in SunValley from the day it opened. The original anchors were Macy's, Penney's and Sears. There was also a GCC movie theater (4 screens, I believe), an S.H. Kress (with its Whirly-Q Lunchette) and a food court (all of which are now gone.) They added on another wing to accommodate a new anchor-Emporium-Capwell. It's now the Macy's Men's and Home store. There was also another major remodel to extend the lower level.

I grew up across the street fom Sunvalley, watched it being built out of a tomato field. Now a days the mall is to high end for most people. Its neat seeing a old picture of the mall.

"High end"?? You're kidding right? It was high end through the 80's now it's ghetto with all the athletic shoe stores and places that cater to kids.

It is high end in some aspects, with places like Coach and Abercrombie and Fitch and other high end retailers. I'm not sure how they get customers that shop much at those establishments, because the customer demographics of the surrounding area are not high end and there are similar shops in Walnut Creek, where the demographics are much more upscale.

Long story, but as a 9 year-old from Sydney my mother and I were staying with a young family in Walnut Creek in 1974. I remember going to a large mall mid-week after dinner to a cinema multiplex (something which didn’t exist in Australia at the time) to see a double feature of ‘Alice In Wonderland’ and ‘Charley And The Angel’. Based on this image and what I recall of that night, I’d wager this is the place. I also have vivid memories of a drive up Mt Diablo on another day in that family’s Dodge van, which was a little terrifying.
